Jesus Mora

Was born in 1971 in a suburb near Mexico City. In 1995 studied drawing and painting in Casa de la Cultura de Chapultepec, Mexico. During a trip to Oaxaca, Mexico he got involve with Antonio Mandarin who taught him the technique to make ?alebrijes?. Two years later he started his studies in Toronto School of Art and Ontario College of Art. In 2002 he studied for 8 months in Florence, Italy where could extend his knowledge in sculpture and art history. For the past few years he had participated in several art projects and community workshops.

The artist is presenting four images of painted and carved wooden trunk and sticks. The artist uses the natural shapes of these pieces of wood as the starting point for his hybrid figures.

Image 1: A wooden walking stick carved and painted with white and blue. There is a face on the handle that represents a mythical creature.

Image 2: A heavy piece of wood carved on top with the head of a man with only one arm.

Image 3: A convoluted wooden truck that has been painted with yellow and covered in red dots. This is a hybrid creature which has an open mouth with sharp white teeth.

Image 4: The wood sculpture has the head of a hybrid creature painted with a blue, red, and white eye. His head is yellow filled with red dots. He has large nostrils and many sets of teeth over his face.
